Mancala is an ancient game played with seeds or stones in Egypt before 1000 B.C. It spread from Egypt through other parts of Africa and the Middle East. It is still alive and well today.
There are 6 cups on the top line (player 2) and 6 cups on the bottom line (player 1). The two larger containers on the left and right are the scoring cups and don't belong to either player. Each player starts with 4 stones in each cup represented by numbers in the computerised game above. Players take it in turns to empty their cups and distribute the stones. In this game, the computer does this for you when you click on one of the numbers. When it is your go, the numbers are big. You can try this now by clicking or touching your screen. When the stones are distribuled, the numbers turn red. When a stone falls into one of the end cups, the stone is removed and a point is added to your score. If the stone is also the last stone in the distribution that ends in one of the end cups, you get an extra go. When you have no turns left, your opponents' numbers will become big indicating it is now their turn.
If the last stone in the distribution falls in an empty cup on your side, you capture your opponants stones that are in the cup opposite in addition to your final stone. This can greatly increase your score. You also get another go.
The game can end in one of 2 ways. The first way is when one of the players gains a score of 24 or more. When this happens, all the stones in the cups belonging to the respective players are taken and added to the players' scores. The second way the game can end is when a player runs out of stones to play. When this happens, again, all the stones in the cups belonging to the respective players are taken and added to the players' scores.
